Aztec New Mexico History
Officially founded as a city in 1887, Aztec and the areas around it have been called “home” by people for thousands of years. Early occupants were known as Anasazi, Navajo for “the ancient ones”. Their history in the area can still be seen at the Aztec National Monument, a 500 room pueblo with the nations largest reconstructed Great Kiva.
In 1948, the story goes, Aztec had a visitor from very far out of town. In a book published in 1950 called “Behind the Flying Saucers”, the columnist Frank Scully claimed that in 1948 a UFO landed in Aztec New Mexico and 16 humanoid bodies were found dead inside. As a result of this, Aztec has hosted a UFO symposium every year since 1997.
Golf, fishing, hiking and 29 miles of local bike trails all help make Aztec an ideal destination for someone looking to bask in the bountiful sun of New Mexico. After a day of adventuring, go shopping down Aztec’s Historical Main Street and enjoy the many restaurants and amazing food.
